Carlos Arredondo observed Memorial Day his own way: protesting the war he opposes, paying tribute to his
fallen Marine son and providing a cathartic show of public grief with his mobile memorial.

For a man whose life revolves around traveling the country with his sorrowful display, there was no other place
to be yesterday than beside the square named for his son, Lance Cpl. Alexander Arredondo, in Jamaica Plain,
where he was bid a tearful farewell September 2004 at age 20.

“It’s hitting home right now - the war is hitting home,” said the elder Arredondo, 47, the Costa Rica native who
made national news after setting himself ablaze in the van of the Marines who delivered the news of his son’s
death in Iraq.

Arredondo later found his way, he said, in activism. “I find some comfort in doing this and sharing with others,”
he said.

He has traveled from coast to coast with his pickup truck carrying a flag-draped coffin and combat boots that sit
empty like his enduring void. Pictures of his son through the years adorn the display along with childhood stuffed
animals and other mementos.
